Po Kim (1917-2014) founded the Dept. of Fine Arts at Chosun University in Korea. However, Po was incarcerated and tortured during the Korean war and left Korea in 1955 to accept a fellowship at Univ. of Illinois. He moved to NYC a few years later and was absorbed into the NY School AbEx movement where he painted alongside the first generation masters. He lived and worked there for 60 years.
Rich in narrative, his paintings contained personal themes and mysterious alternative realities filled with animals, humans and nature.
Po’s work has been exhibited in the Smithsonian Institute, the UN, Korean National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gyeongam Art Museum. His works are in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim museum, National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea and the Seoul Art Center. He left behind a strong legacy in his paintings, the innumerable artist he inspired, an art gallery in NYC, and a museum in Korea which bears his name.
